Statement from the President
Dear Ward 8 Democrats,
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all Ward 8 voters who participated in this election, whether by mailing in ballots or casting votes at the polls. While mail-in votes are still being counted, we are proud to report that over 50% of our ward's registered voters turned out, making their voices heard and contributing to the democratic process.
We also want to recognize and congratulate the Democratic nominees who appeared on the Ward 8 ballot and emerged victorious in their respective races:
While the outcome of the presidential race did not align with our hopes for Vice President Kamala Harris, we celebrate her historic campaign and the significant progress made. Her run has added even more cracks in the glass ceiling, inspiring young girls everywhere — perhaps even one from Ward 8 — to aim higher and dream bigger.
On Initiative 83, the outcome was not what we had hoped for, but we remain committed to advocating for the values and policies that reflect the will of our community.
To our incredible Ward 8 volunteers, thank you! Your efforts — whether through working at Vote Centers, watch parties, making calls, sending texts, writing letters and postcards, or even traveling to states like Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Maryland — made a real impact. Your dedication exemplifies the power of community-driven advocacy, and you should take pride in what we accomplished together.
I'll close with this: as a party, we have some reflection to do. It's essential that our values and vision align closely with the needs, hopes, and aspirations of the people we serve. But rest assured, we will come back stronger. With your continued support, we will build a Democratic Party that not only represents but champions the ideals and dreams of our community with an even bigger agenda for the future.
Thank you for standing with us and for your unwavering commitment to a brighter, more inclusive future.
In solidarity,
Troy Donte' Prestwood

Vote "NO" on I-83: Protect the Integrity of Our
Democratic Primaries
With voting already underway for the November 5 General Election, it's crucial to be aware of the terrible impact of Initiative 83 on our Democratic primaries. This initiative proposes Rank Choice Voting and Semi-Closed Primaries, allowing non-Democratic voters to participate in selecting our Democratic candidates. While fostering a diverse voting process is important, this initiative risks undermining the very foundation of our party's values and decision-making.
While conversations around electoral reforms are necessary, Initiative 83 combines two complex issues—Rank Choice Voting and Semi-Closed Primaries—into one proposal that isn't suited for the voting needs of the District. We believe it will cause confusion at the polls for voters, especially our seniors.
This November, we must protect the Democratic Party's voice and values. Stand with us and Vote NO on Initiative 83 to keep our primaries closed and secure.
Talk to your friends, family, and neighbors—together, we can safeguard the future of our party.
