Congress Heights, DC— The Ward 8 Democrats today voted to support the reelection of Muriel Bowser for mayor of the District of Columbia. The Ward 8 political club also voted to support Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton’s attempt for a 15th term; and Shadow Representative Franklin Garcia's shot at his third. The endorsement forum was held at the Old Congress Heights School in the neighborhood bearing its name, and focused on a range of topics including affordable housing, development, public safety and schools and is the final forum before the June 19 primary.
Out of 126 ballots counted, Bowser received 108 votes for a total of 86 percent of the vote. Norton received 94 votes for a total of 75 percent of the votes cast while Garcia received 80 votes for a total of 63 percent. A high bar of 60 percent of total votes cast is needed to receive an endorsement from the Ward 8 Democrats.
Despite bestowing its endorsement, Mayor Bowser was absent. An announcement was made that the mayor wanted to be at the forum was under the weather had to cancel her Saturday schedule. Ernest E. Johnson was the only mayoral candidate to take the stage as James Butler was a no-show. Johnson participated in a Q&A with the moderator, took questions from the community. Shadow Rep. Garcia was also absent; no reason was given. Congresswoman Norton, however, was present and debated her challenger, Kim R. Ford, for 40 minutes on full voting rights for DC resident, gun laws and other federal issues.
Although there was no endorsement for Shadow Senator, however newcomer Andria Thomas bested long-time Senator Michael Brown with 55 percent of vote. Brown received 27 percent, respectively.

We hope many of the issues discussed with our voters will remain on the top of your list as you work with us to make our Ward great,” said Ward 8 Democrats President Charles Wilson. “On behalf of the Executive Committee of the Ward 8 Democrats, I would like to thank Ernest Johnson, Kim Ford and Andria Thomas for their spirited participation and engagement of Ward 8 Democratic voters.”
