Statement on the June 21 Primary Election
Ward 8 Democrats President Troy Donte' Prestwood issued the following statement on the results of the June 21 Primary Election:
"On behalf of the Executive Committee of the Ward 8 Democrats, I want to once again congratulate Muriel Bowser on winning the DC Democratic primary for mayor. Bowser won the plurality of votes in our Ward and in six others. If you recall, she also tied for first place in our May 21 straw poll. She moves on to the November 8 General Election, where she is teed up to win a historic third term as mayor.
"There was a noticeable uptick in the number of Ward 8 voters, thanks partly to mail-in ballots, a voting method first advocated by the Ward 8 Democrats more than 20 years ago. So far, data shows we doubled the turnout from the 2018 primary, and some votes are still being counted. You can see all of the latest primary election results here. We want to thank the DC Board of Elections staff and Vote Center volunteers who helped ensure a smooth election.
"There were other Democratic primary wins up and down the ballot as well. Congratulations to Phil Mendelson for Council Chair (straw poll winner); Brian Schwalb for Attorney General; Anita Bonds for At-large Council; and Eleanor Holmes Norton for Delegate to Congress (straw poll winner). A Norton victory in November will be her 16th term in Congress. Oye Owolewa and Linda L. Gray remain locked in a tight race for Shadow US Representative and remain too close to call. DC Board of Elections has until July 8 to count all votes.
"Ward 8 voters also elected members of the DC Democratic State Committee (DC Democratic Party) including Wanda Lockridge and Regina Pixley as Ward 8 Committeewomen and Stuart Anderson and David Meadows as Ward 8 Committeemen. And Charles Wilson was elected to one of seven At-large Committeemen seats on the State Committee. We want to thank State Committeemembers Anthony Muhammad, Sharece Crawford, and Kemry Hugues, who are transitioning off the State Committee, for their service to the Ward and Party.
"We applaud the campaigns of Trayon White (tied for first place in our straw poll), Robert White, James Butler, Ryan L. Jones (who won the Ward and our straw poll), Bruce V. Spiva, Erin Palmer, Nate Fleming (straw poll winner), Lisa Gore, Dexter Williams, Wendy Hamilton, and Kelly Mikel Williams for running spirited races that resonated with many Ward 8 residents. We know each of you will continue to serve the District to make it safer and more inclusive to live, work, and raise a family.
"Lastly, we especially want to shout out the campaigns of Trayon White, Robert White, Erin Palmer, Anita Bonds, Lisa Gore, Eleanor Holmes Norton, Kelly Mikel Williams, Wendy Hamilton, Oye Owolewa, and Linda L. Gray for their direct support of our Get Out the Vote efforts in Ward 8. Their investments helped make a difference in voter engagement and turnout.
"Now that the primary election is over, I'm calling on the winners and those who fell short to work cooperatively on public safety, education, affordable housing, and workforce development, to name a few. These are issues our voters care about, and we know you do too. Now is the time to save our beloved city and each other."
